WHAT IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Laser hair removal is one of the most done cosmetic procedures practiced in clinics and have been in use since 1997 and have been approved for "permanent hair reduction" in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Under the FDA's definition, "permanent" hair reduction is the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing after a treatment regime. Indeed, many patients experience complete regrowth of hair on their treated areas in the years following their last treatment. This means that although laser treatments with these devices will permanently reduce the total number of body hairs, they will not result in a permanent removal of all hair

Laser hair removal is the process of hair removal by means of exposure to pulses of laser light that destroy the hair follicle. Pigment in the follicles absorb the light. That destroys the hair.

The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn't result in permanent hair removal. Some will need touch-up treatments, especially on large areas, after the initial set of 3–8 treatments.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Laser hair removal can virtually remove unwanted hair on most parts of the body. Not every area should be treated (eyes and surrounding areas).

The laser hair removal process isn’t too bad, the pain is different depending on kind of the skin, works sending the light of a laser through the pigment in the hair. “This light converts to heat, which damages the hair follicle.

Melanin is considered the primary chromophore for all hair removal lasers currently on the market. Melanin occurs naturally in the skin and gives skin and hair their color. The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis (SPTL), the matching of a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to obtain optimal effect on a targeted tissue with minimal effect on surrounding tissue. Lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter, melanin, thereby heating up the basal stem cells in the follicle which causes hair growth, the hair follicle, while not heating the rest of the skin. Light is absorbed by dark objects but reflected by light objects and water, so laser energy can be absorbed by dark material in the hair or skin, with much more speed and intensity than just the skin without any dark adult hair or melanin.

HOW IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL USED?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that requires training to perform and carries potential risks. Laser hair removal is a procedure to remove unwanted hair on your body. If you are planning on undergoing laser hair removal, you should limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis for four weeks at less prior treatment, because the laser targets the hairs' roots, which are temporarily removed by waxing or plucking, you should also avoid sun exposure for four weeks at less before and after treatment. Sun exposure makes laser hair removal less effective and makes complications after treatment more likely.

It’s noninvasive, which means it doesn’t require any cuts in your skin. The lasers designed for hair removal can be used on most parts of the body: Armpits, Back, Bikini area, Chest, Face, especially the upper lip and chin (exclude eyes and surrounding areas), Legs, Neck, Shoulders.

WHAT IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREAT?

Before starting the laser hair removal treatment, the selection area must be cleanly shaved within 24 hours prior and not use wax or pluck the area being treated between or prior to sessions. The treatment area needs to be free from makeup, lotion, deodorants, and sun cream. The area cannot be treated if it has been exposed to sun within 4 weeks prior to treatment. Tanning products cannot be used 3-4 weeks prior to treatment; the area should be thoroughly exfoliated to remove all residues.

Laser hair removal usually requires two to six treatments. The interval between treatments will vary depending on the location. On areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip, the treatment might be repeated in four to eight weeks. On areas of slow hair growth, such as the back, the treatment might be every 12 to 16 weeks.

For each treatment you'll wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam. During the procedure the doctor will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cool gel might be used to protect your skin and lessen the risk of side effects. When the doctor activates the laser, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the hair follicles. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth. You might feel discomfort, such as a warm pinprick, and smell smoke and burning hair. This is normal the hair burning away from the laser’s heat. Treating a small area might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area might take more than an hour.
