TESTOSTERONE

WHAT IS TESTOSTERONE?

Testosterone is a hormone found in humans, as well as in other animals. Testosterone is a steroid from the androstane class containing a ketone and a hydroxyl group at positions three and seventeen respectively. It is biosynthesized in several steps from cholesterol and is converted in the liver to inactive metabolites. It exerts its action through binding to and activation of the androgen receptor. In humans and most other vertebrates, testosterone is secreted primarily by the testicles of males (see Biosynthesis) and, to a lesser extent, the ovaries of females. On average, in adult males, levels of testosterone are about seven to eight times as great as in adult females. As the metabolism of testosterone in males is more pronounced, the daily production is about 20 times greater in men. Females are also more sensitive to the hormone.

The production of testosterone starts to increase significantly during puberty and begins to dip after age 30 or so. Testosterone is most often associated with sex drive and plays a vital role in sperm production. A man’s testosterone levels can also affect his mood.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT TESTOSTERONE?

Testosterone also acts on cells in the testes to make sperm. It’s important for overall good health; testosterone helps the growth of bones and muscles, and it affects mood, libido (sex drive), and certain aspects of mental ability. The hormone is present in the body from the early stages of fetal life to old age. At the earliest stage of development, it helps the fetus develop both a male body and a “male brain” (there are gender differences, or “sexual dimorphism” in the human brain).

Levels are highest between the ages of 20 and 30. As men age, testosterone levels fall by about 1% to 2% every year.

Low testosterone is usually caused by a genetic disorder (such as Klinefelter’s syndrome, the commonest chromosomal disorder in males that leads to poor testicular function) or damage to the testes or, in rare cases, a lack of certain complementary hormones made by the brain. Low testosterone levels have a variety of effects at different ages.

In adults, low energy levels, mood swings, irritability, poor concentration, reduced muscle strength and changes in body fat distribution, and low sex drive may result from low testosterone.

HOW IS TESTOSTERONE USED?

The right choice of testosterone delivery is truly based on a patient’s preference and lifestyle. Some men respond better to certain types of testosterone delivery.

Low testosterone can cause many symptoms. Some of these symptoms include, Low sex drive, Fatigue, Weight gain, Difficulty concentrating, Depression, Irritability, Anxiety, Loss of muscle mass, Muscle weakness, Erectile dysfunction, etc.

There are several treatments that can be integrated into a man's regular routine. Based on your goals, lifestyle, and working with a professional in Rosebella Med Spa.

WHAT IS TESTOSTERONE TREAT?

There are different treatments to administer the Testosterone:

Injection: Various formulations are injected every seven to 14 days. Testosterone levels can rise to high levels for a few days after the injection and then slowly come down. This can help improve steady state levels and reduce significant peaks and valleys experienced with once-a-week injection of high testosterone dosages.

Gels: Gels are spread daily onto the skin over both upper arms, shoulders, or thighs. One application every morning mimics the natural release of testosterone in the body. The gel dries quickly with little residue, and it’s easy to apply. Benefits of transdermal gels include more steady state levels of testosterone.

Skin patch: A patch is applied once every 24 hours, in the evening, and releases small amounts of the hormone into the skin.

Oral therapy: Capsules are swallowed or tablets are attached to your gum or inner cheek twice a day. Testosterone is then absorbed into the bloodstream. There is no shot, no skin application. The tablets are easy to swallow.

Pellets: These are implanted under the skin, usually around the hips or buttocks, and slowly release testosterone, and have the longest duration of all the testosterone replacement methods, lasting 4-6 months.

WHAT BENEFITS CAN I GET WITH TESTOSTERONE TREAT?

Benefits of increasing your testosterone levels:

Healthy heart and blood: Testosterone help red blood cell production through the bone marrow. Low testosterone levels are linked to a variety of cardiovascular risks.

Less fat, more muscle: Testosterone is responsible for increased muscle mass. Leaner body mass helps control weight and increases energy. For men with low testosterone, studies show Trusted Source that treatment can decrease fat mass and increase muscle size and strength.

Stronger bones: Testosterone plays a huge role in bone mineral density. Bone density decreases as men age and testosterone levels drop. This raises the risk of weak bones and osteoporosis. Strong bones help support your muscles and internal organs, which can boost athletic performance.

Better verbal memory, spatial abilities, or mathematical reasoning

Research shows that men with higher ratios of total testosterone have a reduced incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. There’s also evidence for a strong correlation between testosterone and thinking abilities such as verbal memory and faster processing speed.

Better Sleep: Low testosterone levels can lead to lack of sleep and sleep apnea. Testosterone therapy can improve your sleep by balancing your body’s circadian rhythm and overall sleep cycle.

Better libido: Testosterone levels naturally rise in response to sexual arousal and activity. Men with higher levels of testosterone usually have greater sexual activity. Older men need more testosterone for libido and erectile function.

Improved Sense of Wellbeing: Testosterone replacement therapy can help you to feel better overall. Men on low testosterone say they feel stronger, more confident, and less “stressed out” than they did before they started.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF TESTOSTERONE TREAT?

Possible side effects of testosterone therapy include Increased acne, fluid retention, increased urination, breast enlargement, decreased testicular size, decreased sperm count, increased aggressive behaviors.

Testosterone treatment is not advised for men with prostate or breast cancer. Additionally, testosterone therapy may worsen sleep apnea in older people.

People who take testosterone should seek medical attention immediately if symptoms of a heart attack or stroke are present, such as: Chest pain, Shortness of breath or trouble breathing, Weakness in one part or one side of the body, Slurred speech.
